He was launching his new book “One Summer – America 1927”. I resolved to buy a Kindle copy on Amazon but even better – it was available on Audible. I’m currently in the middle of listening to it, and as I write this blog – I began to ponder. I wonder if those who lived in 1927 ever thought that in 2013 – our idea of a Saturday is to drive somewhere for breakfast, cycle 35 km to have lunch and cycle back again. To drop by a grocery to pick up roast chicken, ready to eat green salad or coleslaw for $22 and presto – dinner for four. Of course the house is a mess and the laundry has piled up – but hey it’s 2013.

That’s just how my day went. Ivor and I were suppose to go bush walking but I suggested that we go cycling instead. Our next group cycling will go from Homebush to Prospect, so I thought we do some recci and find some back routes to make the ride “safe-ish”.

I wanted another car free day, so I got up early and rode to the train station. Getting there, I discovered that there were track works. Bus were replacing trains and they will not take bikes. Not to worry, I’ll cycle to the next station without track works about 9 km away. But, on route, the cycle track is blocked with upgrades of the cycle path in progress. The alternate route is a lot longer which involves heading back close to home. I decided to go back home instead and drove to Homebush. Not conscious of the time, I got there too early, early enough to have a big breakfast.

Ivor and Rommel – Prospect Reservoir

Drew joined this impromptu ride. He has not been in the saddle for sometime but was not worried to ride 70 km as a first ride. We went to Prospect via a scenic route in Rhodes and UWS until we rejoined the M4 cycle way in Parramatta. I was following the cycle path when Ivor came running after me as I missed the turn off to Prospect.

As we got to Randle Street, my bike started to feel funny – it’s as if I’m slipping on an oil slick. That’s when I learned that’s how it feels to have a puncture. In replacing the tubes, we discovered that I’m still using an oversized tube, folded to fit into the tyres as an emergency measure sometime last year. I forgot all about it and have been using it that way all this time. It turns out that my spare tubes are also several size smaller – but it’s all we have and will have to do for now. Hopefully – not to stay there for another year.

We chose a very windy day to ride. The wind is so strong, we needed to pedal down hill. Our final destination was the Cricketers Arm Pub in Reservoir Road. A huge development of a ‘Wet-N-Wild’ theme park is in progress next to it, making the area very dusty. We had a big lunch and a nice pint of beer. It would have been perfect, except that we still have to cycle another 35km back to our cars.

My Garmin FR210 is at it again, it ran out of juice by 4:00pm and failed to record the last 30 minutes of the ride. Nevertheless – it is the one I’ve recorded for the Garmin Connect.

Last Thursday, I heard an interview on the radio with Bill Bryson.
