Gravatar and MyAvatar Enabled

Para sa mga tagapagtangkilik:

This site is now Gravatar (short for Global Avatar) enabled. If you post comments in this site, a default icon will appear next to your name. To have your own unique icon (avatar), upload an avatar in https://site.gravatar.com using the email address you use when you post your comments.

Under the hoods

When you register in https://site.gravatar.com , your email address is encrypted using the MD5 algorithm. The encryption is used as a key to your Avatar.
When you leave a comment on this site (or any other Gravatar enabled sites), use the same email address. The comment parser calculates your MD5 key and fetches your avatar.

On the page/post itself, your email is never revealed. Only the MD5 key can be seen by anyone who may be reading the HTML source. It is almost impossible to reverse engineer this code back to your email address.

The whole point of this is to avoid your email address from being harvested/collected by robots who may use it to send spam messages.

WordPress.com does NOT use an external gravatar repository but rather uses their own. It makes sense because there are millions of wordpress users login at any point in time – to use an external repository would cause undue traffic outside their network. This means that if you’re leaving comments on a e.g. https://someone.wordpress.com – you’re best to create your own account and upload an avatar. This will show in all comments you make on their hosted sites.

Update

Thanks to scarty.com , this site now also supports MyAvatar from MyBlogLogs.

  1. suggestion ko mas maganda gamitin yung myavatar plugins. kinukuha nya avatar mo sa mybloglog. wala lang yun kasi uso ngayon hehehhe

  2. Hi Scarty

Salamat sa suggestion mo. Now I have the best of both worlds. Gravatar and MyAvatar enabled na itong site ko. By placing MyAvatars(true) sa comments.php, sa MyBlogLog nya kukunin, pero pag wala dun sa Gravatar naman.
