Solo Rider 292

2 March 2008 : It’s the 13th Annual Tour de Hills Classic. A ride that takes you through the streets of Dural and marvel at the facade of 17-room sprawling homes seated in acres of land. (I’m NOT exaggerating, some of these homes were massive and you’ll need an army of gardeners to maintain the premises.)

There were suppose to be four of us who would join hundreds others for this ride. But with the threat of rain and the inaccessibility of the Dural Country Club (starting/ending line), 3 had pulled out – making me a solo rider and I was given the badge 292.

It was a chilly start but I had my wind breaker and it was handy – the first 5km was downhill and the wind is still cold at 9:00am. At 14km – I was ill prepared for some steep hills. It’s always not good for you ego to dismount and walk – other riders passes you and ask if you’re alright – they might as well say – ‘You wimp!’ 🙂

At 25Km, the path seemingly look like a relentless climb, perhaps it’s why they call it the Tour de Hills. I have shifted down to almost my granny gear and have unclicked my cleats as I contemplate to dismount once more. But, huffing and puffing with one stroke of pedals after another, by the time you know it – you’re on top of the hill – only to turn another corner and there are more roads to climb ahead. Darn – I don’t mind hills – as long as they’re heading DOWN!

It was a short 35km run, but as a rider commented – It’s not the Ks – it’s the hills.
